    talk to me, betty.

    [audio:bubbasparxxx-talk2mebetty.mp3]

for some reason, when i first heard bubba sparxxx song, i thought he was referring to the ubiquitous “Betty.” The Page, Davis, Rubble or any of the countless pinup/skater/bartenders with sailor tattoos and an affinity to brown liquor.

    boy, was i wrong.

    Betty Davis

Read more about her at soul-sides, then go buy an album or two.

    UPDATE:
thanks to a heads up from the comments, donnie made me take another look at some joi songs i’ve had sitting around. i picked up starkitty’s revenge and amoeba cleaning syndrome sitting and never really listenened to either one. truly, i was hyped for joi after hearing her sing on a live raphael saadiq bootleg from ’04. never knew she did a cover of the song.

the live version of copycat is what hipped me to her in the first place. outside of the lesson screaming that she was next.

  • damaged goods.

    a toast to naitch.

Understand, whenever you are calling some young lass “damaged goods,” it’s because The Nature Boy explained the true meaning of that word. It’s his laugh, that taunting point, the knowing WHOO! and the feeling that your new lady is somebody else’s old lady. She rode Space Mountain and it went All Night Long.

  • judgment day is no gutted.

    and that’s a good thing.

    so, beans album leaks…

nahright throws up the track w/Jay. and the ripple effect happens. which throws me for a loop, cuz, well, “Gutted” just can’t be the track that people were looking forward to on this album. it can’t be the track that stands out ((that’s gotta go to “Go Low”)) from all the rest. so, why so much chatter?

this is no “Still Got Love for You,” “This Can’t Be Life,” or “Where Have You Been.” this isn’t even the “Change the Game (rmx).”

jay singin’ a lil’ Soul II Soul ditty is one of the worst things to happen on wax during this Roc resurgence. right next to lil’ Skateboard P tryna Dawn Robinson the hook.

imnsho, the track that should get the attention is judgment day.

  • most unfortunate.

    50 Eats the Gun

so, freeway’s album has leaked. it doesn’t contain “where you been?” or that small world (not to be confused w/Small Wonder) track that was gettin’ play down in the ATL. overall, after the first listen, all i can feel is — it’s no Philadelphia Freeway. i’d like to be able to call it a sophomore jinx, but, after the ridiculous amount of time between the two albums, this is more likely an indicator of just how much of a perfect storm that first album was.

    this is quite the letdown.

to make matters worse, it’s got, quite possibly, the worst song title ever,
    Nuttin' on Me
da whore-able cyde fx uv da negro’s preoccupation w/misspelling shit for fun-ettical reazuns.

if you can think of a song title worse than that, hit the comments. i smell a top five in the making.

i blame “Fitty.” and, Jay deciding to make American Gangster a solo album over “70’s beats” which basically every member of State Prop (principally Beans & Free) sound better over. i mean, dude didn’t have space on his “concept album” for the people who not only rock the concept better (imnsho) but also who he’s gonna try to get us to spend dollars on in a couple of months to buy their albums. maybe he still thinks that people are gonna buy albums because he drops a Dear Summer on us. or, perhaps he doesn’t give a shit about if anybody else sells.

consider this an ode to what could have been.

  • content drives design or design drives content?

    Who’s Zoomin Who?

i’ve probably used the phrase “content drives design” at least a thousand times or so when discussing “doing websites” for people. i typically throw it out there as a means of discerning how serious people are about creating a site and as an attempt to not do a site for that person. sites are interesting ideas but when it comes down to generating content, people typically kinda, well, yeah…

i should know, i’ve had this site since ’01 and a domain in my name since ’99 and i’ve generated enough content to fill a fly’s navel. although being a fairly prolific writer over certain points in my life, those spurts of brilliance production typically amounted to “responding to lots of posts on other people’s messageboards.”

i’ve used a couple of different tools over the years to capture my ongoing commentary. the first was a custom CF script that i wrote for myself. i’ve also used movable type and now use WordPress. i first used MT because i wanted to learn something different than CF. MT was cool, but, after stepping away from updating i “switched” to WordPress because of the one-click install offered by my hosting company. because my host has eliminated basically all of my effort to setup a mysql database, upgrade my files and all the other garbage that can become a hassle, i’ve been able to spend more time installing plugins, hacking themes, and adding functionality via custom fields and conditional tags.

over the course of time i’ve noticed something that i never thought of before — the addition of certain plugins offered me the ability to write in new ways. this completely goes against my basic beliefs that writing determines tools. the footnotes plugin stands out as one of those things that took something from my natural writing style (the usage of double parentheses) and transformed it into proper clickable footnotes ((see, the thing is, i have used double parentheses as a means of diversionary asides for some time now. they aren’t necessary to the current line of thought, but sometimes extend from it. their really weren’t any hard & fast rules to what goes in a single or double parantheses in my writing until i installed the footnote plugin and realized that some of these pre-plugin thoughts that would have got a double were necessary for the following sentence — thus, making them a single parentheses or “inline” aside)). so, after i turned footnotes on, i needed to style those footnotes, which got me digging around in the css for my template.

  • top five (un)sexy halloween costumes.

another year and another opportunity for nice young respectable ladies to unleash their inner skank in the guise of all hallows eve. like moths to the flame — candy corn and free admission for ladies in costume compels young coeds, coworkers and convention cosplayers to don boots you shouldn’t walk in, fantastic plastics and questionable headgear in celebration of their repressed fantasies.

although an occasional young lass manages to emerge from the pile of cheap accessories looking like a star, the majority of the people shooting for the moon end up lost in space. to help these ladies, i’ve compiled a list of the top 5 costume ideas that they should avoid at all costs. the idea is either overdone (there will be someone else at the party dressed just like you), not as sexy as she thinks (lady cops? lady, stop.) or way too difficult to pull off (hint – episode 4).

    Eagles Cheerleaders

    honorable mention – cheerleader.
the sexy cheerleader is the leading choice for sexy sports/athletics related costumes. there are plenty of options for the lady who wants to show off her sexy & playful side whilst giving in to her partner’s fantasy to plug his favorite athlete. the lingerie bowl gave us sexy football players, mariah showed us how a basketball jersey can become sexy, but none of these have the staying power of the sexy cheerleader.

    Cheerleaders in costume

why they just missed the list.
the thing about cheerleaders, is, they are oft-times sexy. so, although not every girl in a cheerleader outfit is sexy, most real life cheerleaders are. just look at these cheerleaders in halloween costumes. cheerleader in halloween costume vs regular lady in cheerleader costume is about as unfair as last Sunday’s Patriots-Redskins game. ((that 4th quarter touchdown for the deadskins is equivalent to the gruesome chick at the halloween party getting hit on at 3:00am)) the sports genre also holds a few real-life sexy individuals like that volleyball chick, assketball sensation dnika romero, & various forms of questionably sexy bodybuilders, gymnasts & tennis stars.

    continue for the top five
